Kitchen Katastrophe #atozchallenge

A Whimsical Medley - Is my theme for the A to Z Challenge !! Hope you smile today :)
I am notorious for multitasking. But with so many tasks to be completed, what else can one do. So while I am listening to Ellen DeGeneres and typing a new Blogpost, in-between folding clothes I keep an ear out for the Pressure Cooker whistle. In the meantime Potato Paneer is in the making, bubbling on the stove. Although most days I manage without major disaster, there are days when the Paneer would get stuck to the pan, or I publish without proof reading.

I am also notorious for setting off the fire alarm. Since most Indian cooking involves preparing a set like Alif Laila, with smoke and fog and all things blurry, even in cruel winters I used to cook with doors and windows wide open, dressed like an eskimo.

During my hostel days, I used be so lost watching Hannah Monatana that I would lose track of the number of whistles. And then I would have to run to my roommate, hoping that atleast she had kept a tab. Although nothing burnt, ever, but there was a day when I forgot to put water in the pan while trying to boil eggs.

Oh was it me or my roommate. Well, we both were the same - incredibly absent minded.

Along with ClaireParul and Shalini we have formed an Unconventional Alliance with A to Z co-host Pam Margolis as the ring leader ... all set to rock the party.

  1. My grandmother was hard-boiling an egg for me once, and we got to talking and only stopped when the water boiled off and the egg exploded...

  2. hahahahah "Since most Indian cooking involves preparing a set like Alif Laila, with smoke and fog and all things blurry, even in cruel winters I used to cook with doors and windows wide open, dressed like an eskimo." I so very well relate to this. I have burnt my Potato Sandwich an hour back today while multi-tasking!!!

  3. OMG I cannot for the life of me multi-task the way you've mentioned here.
ROFL for the Alif Laila analogy, that was just mind blowing.
    Loved this post :)

  4. My Christmas present from my brother last year was a much-wanted timer on a cord loop to hang round my neck. All I can say is - it works. I haven't burnt anything since!

  5. Hahaha, that was such a fun read Raj! Multi-tasking is something I do too, not very adept either. The most frequent victim is milk...always manage to boil it over and spend a good amount of time cursing myself, cleaning the spill!
And for the record I hate pressure cookers, I work with an electric hoots to hear or bother with!

  6. LOL :D Boiling eggs without water!! This reminded me, KG once kept eggs with water on the stove and forgot all about it. After an hour when he sauntered back in the kitchen, there was no trace of water and the saucepan burnt and I had to throw that pan out!

  7. HiHihi.. I'm giggling like a six year old. :P
I loved the AlifLaila bit and has to agree too. I am good at multi-tasking too, at least I thought. But I cannot keep tab of the pressure cooker whistles. :)

  9. Too hilarious! And the Gordon meme :P
I'm guessing that Paneer getting stuck to the pan would be more desirable than a blog post getting published without a proofread!
    Amazing post, Rajlakshmi ;)

  10. Woah! Boiling eggs without water! That's a new one! :D
You continue to amuse me and amaze me, Raji! :D :D :D
    Loved the Alif Laila analogy!

  11. Hhahaha!!! Boiling eggs without water... I like you <3 <3 <3
I make silly mistakes all the time! And I feel so bad, but I'm not feeling bad when I'm writing about it!

  12. Haha :D I often lose track of the number of whistles too! And may I ask how the eggs turned out?

  13. Occasionally I don't get the top pressed down tightly, or close the whistle on the tea kettle, and it steams away until I randomly wander in or it runs out of water and burns the house down. Okay it hasn't burned down yet but has def blown most of my tea water into steam before I realize. If it weren't for whistles and beeps on my appliances, I'd have been burned out years ago.

  14. you and your multitasking absentmindedness! :D :D

  15. Please stay out of my kitchen. just kidding! #notkidding

  16. My husband (the family cook) has had his share of mishaps. He's ruined pans, burned holes in potholders, and even forgot to turn the stove off once (our son caught it before we had a disaster). By the way, I am so laughing at the Gordon Ramsey illustration.

  17. It easy to lose track when you're doing several things at once. Good thing there weren't any real disasters.

  18. haha.. for me, its tv shows. I get lost while cooking cos I will be engrossed in the shows... esp when u have to wait for 10-20 minutes while cooking meat and ur expected to toss n turn it... never happens without it ending up getting burned a bit :)

  19. ha ha! boiling eggs without water was funny :)
I have burnt many pans while making tea. I still forget that I have kept tea for brewing. My challenge is losing track of time while relying solely on my sense of smell ;)
